Refill puts the power to reduce plastic at the fingertips of its user. At its core, it was a behaviour change campaign designed to tackle the monumental issue caused by single-use water bottles in the UK; anyone could download the free Refill app to tap into a global network of public taps where to refill there bottles, and add some to the map. A few years later, there are over 30,000 taps on the app, and the app now lists 300,000 Refill stations, offering refills for water, coffee, food containers and plastic-free shopping. Participating businesses simply sign up to the app and put a sticker in their window, alerting passers-by that they’re welcome to come on in and get a refill. As a result, at this point, 100,000,000 single-use bottles are estimated to have been saved from entering the waste stream.
